One of our quality improvement (QI) projects here at Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust has been shortlisted in the HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2022.
The project aimed to improve medicine safety for pupils in special schools. It has been shortlisted in the improving care for children and young people initiative of the year category.
The project was led by the trust’s former deputy chief pharmacist Nirusha Govender and the specialist pharmacy team, who worked with Foreland Fields school in Ramsgate. They reviewed the schools existing pupil medicines management processes and created new procedures as well as a training package for all staff and year-round support.
The team work with 10 special schools across Kent and has issued more than 200 clinical interventions in the past year since launching the project, which resulted in actions to help improve or change processes.

Winners will be selected ahead of an HSJ ceremony, which will take place as part of the Patient Safety Congress and Awards in Manchester, in September 2022.
