Having an asthma action plan in place means a child is less likely to need an emergency visit to the doctor or hospital, their asthma symptoms improve and so does their quality of life.
For these reasons work has taken place to increase the number of asthma actions plans in place for children in specialist schools.
When the Specialist Services Pharmacy Team at Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust set out to improve numbers, 77 per cent, or 214 children in these schools in Kent had a plan in place and 23 per cent, or 65 children did not.
They aimed to increase those with a plan to 95 per cent, but managed to reach 96.7 per cent. Next the team plans to do further work, after an audit revealed that many inhalers could be labelled better, many only having labels on the outer packaging. They are also to see if pharmacy technicians could do asthma reviews in future.
